Double page spread interview

 When did you start singing?

I always used to sing around the house, in the shower (she giggles), anywhere really but my singing career didn't start till I was 16, that was when I starred as Sandy in a Grease musical, after that I was signed to a label but didn't release any music till I was 18.

You're now a house artist how did this love of house come about?

Well it happened last year, I wanted to take a year out and just relax because the last 3 years I haven't had a real holiday and was constantly working, so I went to a few festivals and then went on a long holiday in Ibiza that's where I met James (Smith). We had met at a festival and talked for a bit but that was it until Ibiza. We met up and I went to one of his concerts that's when asked me to come on stage and sing.

Do you regret starting as a pop artist?

No never as that was my first passion. Yes maybe I regret some of the hairstyles I had and the clothing I wore, doesn't everyone but not the music. My very first song I produced got into the top 40 charts although it was at number 38 it was my first song ever produced and it still got in and I was so proud of myself, just because I've changed genres and grown doesn't mean I regret being a pop artist.

Do you feel like your fans agree with your changes to house?

Hopefully they embrace the change but I have grown up and changed, I'm not a little girl anymore, I have found my maturity. As I have matured my fans matured and if they don't agree with my change that's fine everyone has different genres of music they ;like and don't, yet most of my fans have liked the change and they like the new me and my new music, which I'm so glad of. Me and my music have matured.

What was your most memorable moment of your career?

Most memorable moment. That's a tough one. I would have to say when I was holiday and James asked me to come on stage and sing on his tracks that was amazing I felt quite free when I was doing that as it was such an amazing experience.

Now that you've changed will you do collaboration?

I want to do more collabs definitely. I'd love to collab with Calvin Harris for sure and to be able to collab with David Guetta and Avicii that would be amazing, but I would want to do more collabs with my boyfriend James (Smith).

Do you miss your family and friends when your doing concerts and gigs?

Yes and no, that sounds awful doesn't it (she laughs) but I have a family in the form of my production team but I do miss my mum and dad. Nothing is better than a big cuddle from my mum and dad.
These are the questions on my double page spread.

Evaluation questions

Evaluations q's 2 from charliemae1999

Due to technical difficulties my own Slideshare account was not working, so was able to use another one of my fellow media student account however this is all my own work and this is all mu own evaluation questions and answers.

final contents page of music magazine

Final front cover of music magazine

Feedback:
"I really like the masthead as it links really well to the genre of House music. I also really like the black, white and red theme, as it creates a lot of colour triangles and ultimately draws you into the main image of your male artist. Your main article has a clear link to the main image and looks really good. The social media sites and website idea is really interesting as it links to the social group of most teenagers to adults now a days. Your male artist using direct address is another intriguing feature as you feel as a reader that he is looking directly at you and addressing you. Maybe you could change the colour of the word ‘favourite’ in your strapline so that you can emphasise that it is a loved magazine."

"I like the how the picture looks like he is holding the quote as if he is presenting it. The background colour makes everything bold, and it creates synergy with the contents page and double page spread"

After having feedback I changed my strapline to having the word 'favourite' and  changed the colour to white which contrast against the black background which is bold and striking to the reader.

double page spread improvements and final double page spread

After doing improvements on my double page spread I have still tried to create synergy by having the colour purple as a background colour for the interview columns, the colour of purple and the yellow colour of the writing is a good contrast.
I have made the main image of the front cover in front of the columns of as the main image is bold and this draws the readers eye to the main image.
As the publishing print is expensive for magazines so I decided that instead of all of the background is purple as this would be too expensive I would only have columns highlighted purple as this is cheaper for the publishing company.

double page spread example; mixmag

After looking more at this house double page spread from mixmag it shows that the interview is in defined columns and clearly set out.#
At the bottom of the double page spread it shows the artist shown his album and when the release date is, I liked the idea and the way it looks on the page, I will do this on my double page spread as it advertises the artists album.
I will try and create synergy in my double page spread to be able to connect with the front page and contents page.

Double page spread

This is my current double page spread, I have used a dark colour for the background to show and reflect the moodiness I wanted to come through I highlighted the questions to show what is the questions and what are the answers, I have moved my main image to the right side and as this is one of the problem I addressed from my focus group.

Interview about magazine

On the 13th March we had a man called Roger from TESCO's PLC come in and interview me and asked me about what I did on our music magazine and why we did it. He gave me advice of what I should do to improve on my music magazine. He asked me about my front page, double page spread and contents page and made me do a 1 minute pitch about what my music magazine is about and how I came to doing that genre of music and why I put what I did in my magazine. I explained to him about how I challenged, used and developed conventions of a music magazine as well as telling him about the characters on my magazine.

Contents page (new) alterations

This is my current contents page I have tried to keep with the theme of black, white and red by having the text in white, the titles in red and having a slight black in the background.
I chose the 'regulars, features and going out' as the regulars are the articles that will always be in the magazine, the features are the articles about the artists and the songs and music which will different every time there is a new magazine out and having the going out for example like the nightlife or the Ibiza holiday which can relate to my target audience (ages 15-30 years) as this is could interest them as at that age many people want to go out with friends on holidays etc.

I used different pictures and labelled them with the page number of the article as this was a common feature on most magazines which I wanted to put in my contents page.
I also put social medias on there as this is aimed at my target audience as having social medias is common for people of that age.

front cover; (new) alterations

I have made alterations to my front cover, Firstly have changed the font on the masthead to the stapline above as I thought this would look more effective as well as making the masthead have a more edgy look and that complement the genre of house music.
Next I have changed the cover lines, as before I had all my cover lines highlighted with a black background I found that this made the magazine look to crowded so I experimented and only kept a few cover lines highlighted with the black background, however I still kept the theme of the black, white and red colours as this connects and make colour triangles.

New front cover (changes)

This is my current front cover that I have made changes to, with the new main image and the way the cover lines are positions differently.

  • The changes I have made are; the pose of James as I have changed the quote to make it look like he is holding it.
  • I have also changed the background and photoshop the main image onto the page, I gave quite a plain background I did this because most of the house magazine covers I looked at had the main image and then a just a plain background.
  • The cover lines I have coordinated colours of black, white and red which has colour triangles of the red shoes and the black and white clothes.
  • I have put the social medias on my front cover as it can appeal to my target audience as most 15-30 years olds will have social medias.
  • I  have photoshop my main image and then put it in front of my masthead as most magazine covers will have the same masthead on every magazine but the target audience will still know that it is that magazine even when the main image is in front of the masthead.

photoshop; new changes

This is the original photo for my front cover, I shall photoshop the background out to make the rest look suitable for the front cover.

Here I have photoshop the background out of the picture and left the person who is going to be James Smith on my front cover, I shall put him onto the front cover on a plain background this will make my magazine front cover look more like some of the magazine covers I have looked at.

front cover photos image changes

After looking at the drafts of my music magazine I used with the background of the front cover having an old building I wasn't completely happy with it, as well as looking at house magazines that mainly had the artist with a plain background I decided that I wanted to change the front cover.

I took some more pictures with a plain background. This is the photo I want to use for the front cover of my magazine. I shall photo shop the background out of this picture and the person who is meant to be James Smith on the cover, I shall put onto a background that I am happy with, this is so I can make my magazine front cover look more like one of the house music magazines I have looked at.

double page spread: current

This is my current double page spread that I have improved from the focus group that I have done.

One of the dislikes the focus group wanted to change was the main image of Kinsley was very central and they wanted to change the main image from center to the right side.
I put more images to the double page spread which I put all around the double page spread to be able to give the target audience and fans more insight into what Kinsley is like.
I left the font colour orange as it is able to be read and my focus group liked this colour as it is bold against the background colour. I have also made the questions of the interview bigger than answers to be able to know which part is the answer and which part is the questions.

A focus group double page spread

I asked a group of boys in my target range for my magazine and asked what they thought about drafts for the double page spreads I made.

The first double page spread draft -
Likes- The way they pictures are positioned and that they look quite natural.
Likes the poses of the main image of Kinsley.

Dislikes - the font colour hurts the eyes and the blue on the grey background doesn't work well.
The background colour is dim and dull, too dark.

Improvement - have a brighter colour, simple colour for the background like white.
A colour that is able to be read better than the blue over the background.+

The second double page spread draft -
Likes - styles is better and is more readable due to the orange colour.
The layout is better more organized.
Main image central as other pictures look like they are pushed to the side.

Dislikes - To change the background colour but keep the colour of the font to match a different background colour.
The main image to not be so central and more to the right slightly and make other pictures larger.

Improvements - Main image needs to less central.
Change the background colour to be able to make it brighter.

The male gaze

The male gaze was a theory made by a woman called Laura Mulvey in 1975.

The male gaze is about the visual arts from a masculine perspective. The camera tries to put the audience into the visual of a heterosexual male. Mulvey argues that in cinema the male gaze is used more dominantly than the female gaze.

For an example of the male gaze, the camera may focus on more female features like the curves for longer periods of time, this is to make the males in the scenes look dominant compared to the females as well as making women seem like an object who are seen based only on their physical appearance.

Main image for double page spread

For my main image of my double page spread I have an image that I needed to get rid of the background as it wouldn't of fit in with my idea and background for my double page spread.

This is the original picture of my main image for my double page spread to get rid of the background I removed the background to only have the person left.

This gave me an end result of only having the character left.

Current drafts of front cover

Here are the current drafts for my front cover, I shall ask a group of people that are in my target range for the magazine what they like or dislike about the magazine covers and what I can improve to make the cover better.

Pictures of photo shoot; James Smith

I have taken pictures from my photo shoot that will be used for my music magazine.

The pictures of James Smith I stuck to the theme of having a historical/ regal building in the background, while showing the contrast of the modern, urban James Smith. I did this by showing part of the historical building in the background in a long shot and showing part of the church in the background and then I had him standing in a mid shot in the center of the photo which gives a distinct contrast the two, this is to represent the idea of the binary opposition between Old vs New.

I also took pictures of James Smith and Kinsley meeting at the festival that Kinsley and James Smith went to.  I showed that they knew each other by having James Smith's arm around Kinsley, again to show that Kinsley is still in her girly stage showed her in Pastel colours and smiling in the picture. I also showed James Smith in his recognizable all black clothing which shows his simplistic but modern dress sense.

Pictures of photo shoot; Kinsley

I have taken pictures for my magazine from my photo shoot which shall be used on my music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread.

For the girly Kinsley Bloom who was still a pop artist I wanted her to look youthful and cute by doing this I wanted her top smile in ALL photos, to wear bright pastel colours which will make her look girly. However I had decided to change my location slightly for the photo shoot of girly Kinsley. I decided that I wanted to show her childlike side, by doing this I changed the location to Wicksteed Park in Kettering, Northamptonshire. Wicksteed park is a amusement park which was an ideal locations to reflect Pop artist Kinsley's childlike/ girly side. I chose typical items that would be found at a amusement park to have pictures taken on; so this was the swings and inside the tunnel slide, these were all to reflect the youthful, girly, (still a child) Kinsley.

I also wanted to show Kinsley still in her girly stage but also that she was more likely to go to festivals so by doing this I decided to take a few pictures that looked like they were taken by paparazzi. I did this by taking pictures from a distance and behind her and to the side.

These pictures are showing Kinsley going home from a current festival she has been to with her friend.

To show that Kinsley has grown up and matured I took pictures of her with more serious facial expressions, mature clothing that isn't pastel but dark colours to be able to show her maturity, I also showed her body more closed and moody to be able to reflect her house music stage and that Kinsley has become a grown woman.

I still used the idea of having a blank, plain white background to represent her new stage in her life; her house music genre is a stage in her life that is new and that the blank background is like a blank canvas that she can create a new Kinsley on.

I believe that I have managed to show the binary opposition between mature vs young of Kinsley through the pictures I took;

These two pictures show a difference In the way she is presented, the picture on the left is showing the girly, innocent, young, pop music Kinsley where as the picture on the right show the mature, grown woman, house music Kinsley. These pictures relate to my previous post of Past and Present which shows female music artist that came into music young but now have grown and matured.

Saturday 9 January 2016

Past and Present of music artists

To help me with my photo shoot and with the back story of Kinsley transforming from a Pop singer to a House music artist, I will look at pictures of female artist when they were younger how they pose, the type of clothing they wear, their facial expressions to when the artist has grown up and how they have matured, the types of poses they stand in and their facial expressions, I will try and find similarities through out pictures of different artist and using the information I found out will use this in my photo shoot.

Both of these pictures of Britney Spears show her smiling in both pictures with pastel colours for a background which help to make the colour of her clothing stand out, in one picture she is wearing a skirt which is a stereotypical item of clothing for females. Her head is slightly tilted to the side to show innocence. However when we see the picture of Britney spears when she is older it shows her in a more powerful pose, she isn't smiling more of a smolder to represent sexiness. Her clothing is showing more of a figure and is shown off to represent that she is older and is more able to show of her body because she has matured, and become a woman.

This picture of Miley Cyrus shows her when she was younger, she is also smiling with her head tilted to the side which is made to look innocent and cute, both the picture of Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus do this, this suggests that this is a girly pose and Is common pose for a girly, cute look. Her hair is curled and around the face to bring soft features forward on her face as well as having minimal make up to make her look youthful and to show that she isn't grown up and matured yet. Miley Cyrus clothing in this picture is still girly and isn't revealing which shows her youth and innocents.

These two pictures of Miley Cyrus now shows that she has matured and become woman. We can see from these pictures compared to the one of her when she was younger there is a dramatic change. In the first picture of Miley Cyrus older she has cut her hair short and dyed it blonde which is a complete change to when she had her hair long and brown, this signifies that she has matured and that she is able to become something different. We can also see that she has more make up on which makes her look older and more mature. Her facial expression isn't smiley compared to when she was younger, it looks moody and more intense showing that she has grown up and has become a woman not a girl. In the second photo of Miley Cyrus grown up she is wearing more revealing clothes to show off her figure and to show to the world that she isn't a teenager anymore.

As we can see from these two pictures of Kylie Minogue a big change from when she was younger to when she has matured. In the first picture it shows Kylie smiling, minimal make up and curled hair to bring soft features forward this shows her girly, innocence and that she is still young. Where as the second picture shows her in more revealing clothes, slightly more make up and moody facial expressions to show that she has matured and wants to show off how she has become this woman and that she has become something different from when she was younger and more girly.

After investigating female music artist from when they were younger to older I have noticed that when they're younger facial expressions are smiling and wide eyes, make up is minimal to shows youth, curled hair to bring soft features of the face, non revealing clothes, for poses the head is slightly tilted to the side ad pastel, girly colours for background and clothing.

I found when looking at the artist when they're older that the facial expressions look moody, more intense, not smiling. More revealing clothes to show a figure off, more make up to signify maturity, darker, bolder colours to  symbolise the change from girl to woman.

By investigating these changes I shall use what I have found for my photo shoot of Kinsley.

Friday 8 January 2016

Photoshoot locations

For my front page I would have James Smith in front of a agricultural building, that looks quite regal to show that he is regal, but I also wanted to show the contrast between historic and modern; James Smith and his genre of music is modern but the building shows the history. The building I was thinking of for the location is at the triangular lodge in Rushton, Northamptonshire. Triangular lodge was built between 1593-1597 by Sir Thomas Tresham and has a triangle shape for the building. I chose this building because the lodge is historic and looks regal which will make a good contrast between the modern music genre of house of James Smith.

As the triangular lodge is surrounded by fields and greenery, I will also use this location to take my photos for Kinsley for when she is still in her girly, pop princess stage of her music career. I will use the fields to represent Kinsley at a festival which shows her when she was more likely to go to festivals to get noticed to show her music.

I shall also do a photo shoot at school with white or grey backgrounds to show the new, edgy look to represent that Kinsley has transformed into this new house sensation as well as showing that the white or grey backgrounds represent she is starting a new period in her life and that the white backgrounds are a new canvas for Kinsley to work with.

Contents page draft comments

After having made a draft for my contents page I asked a group of people If they would be able to critic it and see what they liked and the dislikes about it so I can improve upon it.

Likes -  The layout of the contents page was simplistic so that it was easy to read.

Liked the pictures used on the contents page.

Liked the colour of the masthead.

Dislikes -   The colour of the cover lines, the don't stand out enough.

                  Needs more pages.

Show the importance of other articles with different colours on the cover lines or different
                 size fonts.

Different colour puff "free CD"  to make it interesting.

To be able to improve my contents page I will -
  • Change the colour of the cover lines to be able to look bold against the background colour and so the reader is able to read it.
  • Most show more pages on the contents page as there would be more pages than 12 in a music magazine.
  • Change the colour or font size of different cover lines to show the more or least important or the articles that would be interesting to the readers.
  • Change the colour of the puff to make it look more interesting
